fieldtrip to wissahickon valley park, philadelphia

Going home to Philadelphia I love spending time with family, but inevitably there are times when I feel the urge to slip away for a moment. In moments like these, there's a little secret place I like to escape to—the beautiful Wissahickon Valley Park...

This park is lush, vast, and a welcome reprieve from the bustling city life only a few miles away. There are people playing and swimming in the river, diners at the Inn, and bikers and runners all along Forbidden Drive...

...and gaggles of geese. You can bring old bread to feed them if you're daring, but be warned they can be mean!

I usually stick to the Forbidden Drive trail. You can stop at points to learn about the bridges, paper mills, and history of the area.

The first public drinking fountain is even located here! (Although it has long since been sealed due to water pollution. ):

Afterwards I recommend stopping by the snack shack near the inn for a swirl of ice cream to cool down. If you're ever feeling the need to escape the city noises of Philadelphia, go on a nature retreat to Wissahickon Valley Park!
