fieldtrip to palm springs, california

On a whim, my friends and I decided to throw our cares to the wind and book a trip to nearby Palm Springs for a quick, relaxing getaway! Little did we anticipate the 110 degree weather we'd encounter, but nonetheless it was a great escape. Based on this weekend experience, I've concocted the perfect two day retreat...

9 p.m. (Friday night) I say Friday night, but if you're a big planner you may want to reserve your accommodations further in advance. We stayed at the The Saguaro Hotel, however if I were to go again I'd forgo the boutique hotels and stay at an AirBnB rental like this one or this one. They're quieter and have more space for equal (or lesser) value.

9:30 a.m. (Saturday morning) Yeah, we're slow to the start, but head Eastward from L.A. to Palm Desert, perhaps stopping for pictures next to the ominous looking wind turbines.

12 p.m. Arrive amidst the sweltering heat and commence hunger fulfillment at Cheeky's. Expect a bit of a wait, but in those 20 minutes you can take the time to ponder why all of the stores/restaurants in downtown Palm Springs are wasting water on their misters amidst the serious California drought as I did.

2 p.m. Now full and thoroughly perspiring, check-in to your lodgings and head over to The Saguaro Hotel. This delayed wait only intensifies the gratification of sliding into the pool during peak 110 degree weather. The Saguaro is fun and colorful with upbeat, lively music...think Vegas meets Palm Desert.

For kick's, you can run around playing a Saguaro Color Hunt by Studio DIY. I happened to match uncannily well with the red wall. Just call me Chameleon Catie. :)

3:30 p.m. Once you tire of The Saguaro's poolside club party, hop down the road to The Ace Hotel. The atmosphere here is much more lounge-y. It's perfect for some summer book reading if you can snag a chair near the back.

p.s. While you're at the Ace, get a Desert Facial—mint, cucumber, pineapple juice, vodka. YUM.

5 p.m. Head back to shower and relax before dinner. (Sorry, this is where photos significantly drop off for the rest of the night.)

6 p.m. Despite what Yelp may have to say about the restaurant called Trio, I'd recommend going somewhere with a calmer atmosphere, like Jiao. We happened to walk by there afterwards and were envious of the light filled mason jars and quiet, zen seating compared to our boisterous bachelorette bunch. (No joke, we counted at least 12 just inside Trio.)

8 p.m. After dinner, being the old ladies we are, we walked to get Dole whip ice cream at Lappert's and went back to the hotel to chat about life, love, and whatever else twenty-something year old grandma's talk about. However the night life was vibrant and I'm sure more than a few bachelorettes would enjoy karaoke-ing with you if that's your thing! (Al, I'm talking to you ;) This star-gazing tour sounded fun as well since last time I was in the area I saw the Milky Way.

9 a.m. (Sunday morning) Start the day with light reading/meditating/yoga in a (somewhat) peaceful place.

10 a.m. Head over to Koffi, get a large ice latte and a bite to eat so you're ready for some scavenging! And by that I mean thrifting.

11 a.m. The Palm Springs area has great second-hand stores for mid-century modern pieces due to its surge in popularity from the early 1930s through the 50s.  Revivals was the best, most reasonably priced that we found. We spent nearly two hours there and it was so good that we bought a couch and had to go home after purchasing! You should've seen how we fit in the car for the drive back.

Hooray for Palm Springs! If you have more time and it's not boiling outside, this Modernism architecture tour caught my interest (which you could maybe bike yourself, heat permitting), as well as this gorgeous desert oasis hike. Let me know if you have any other sights or places to check out from your own Palm Springs experience, I'd love to hear!
