fieldtrip: boating in marina del rey

For whatever we lose (like a you or a me)/
it’s always ourselves we find in the sea
-E.E. Cummings
The wisdom of the waves mingled with the smell of salty sea spray clear out tangled thoughts and make your worries melt away. But without the funds to own a vessel, land-bound seems the only way to be. If you're in Los Angeles, here is an affordable idea to navigate out of the harbor and into the ocean blue...

Grab 3 friends, pack a picnic lunch (a.k.a. stop by Mendocino Farms), and head out to Marina Del Rey for an afternoon trip! For $75 you can rent the smallest sized motorboat, no prior experience necessary. However outside of the harbor, to the ocean, arrive before 12 p.m. otherwise it gets too choppy and you can't take the small boat out. Kayaks and Stand Up Paddle boards (SUP) are also available to rent.

For lunch, I head to Mendocino Farms and grab a sandwich before heading out on the water. They have the most delicious Kurobuta Pork Belly Banh Mi sandwich. The Drunken Goat on Hwy 281 with chicken and the Steak Sandwich are also spectacular!

While you're enjoying your lunch, keep your eyes peeled for sea otters, sea lions, even dolphins! I didn't manage to see anything this particular trip except for the pretty ladies in front of me.

If you're looking for a treat to cool you down afterwards, Fisherman's village has a little ice cream shop and Pinkberry  (My favorite frozen yogurt!) is a short drive away near the Mendocino Farms.

Happy sailing, don't forget the sunscreen!
